The market capitalization of Korea's 10 biggest conglomerates fell this year, despite a rise in the total value of the market. The Korea Exchange says the combined value of the nation's top 10 conglomerates was US$552 billion as of last Thursday, down nine percent from the end of last year.

The value of Samsung dropped over 12 percent and listed affiliates of steelmaker POSCO tumbled nearly 30 percent. Meanwhile, the total market value of the benchmark KOSPI gained nearly three percent over the same period thanks to a rise in small and mid-cap stocks.
