Korea is out of the FIFA U-20 World Cup as it lost to Portugal 3-1 in the round of 16 in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province on Tuesday. Portugal is a traditionally strong team, winning in 1989 and 1991, and finishing second in 2011. Korea has met Portugal seven times in the past from 1979 until the last friendly in January this year, and has never won any match.
But expectations grew as Korea outperformed in the group-stage matches, advancing to the round of 16.
In just 10 minutes it turned out to be a tough game, however, as Portugal scored its first goal, followed by two more in the 27th minute and 69th minute to make it 3-0.
Korea managed to at least save face with Lee Sang-heon's goal in the 81st minute but its hopes of repeating the semifinal glory of the 1983 U-20 World Cup in Mexico were crushed.
