World champion and Olympic gold medalist figure skater Kim Yu Na has donated $100,000 to help the victims of the typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.  Kim Yu Na is also the goodwill ambassador to UNICEF.  UNICEF is the United Nations Children’s Fund and is a United Nation program that provides ling term humanitarian and developmental assistance.

Kim has donated money to charitable causes in Korea almost every year, but this year she expressed interest in helping victims of the typhoon.  The money will be used to buy drinking water for children in the affected areas and to improve sanitation and provide education.

Kim also donated W100 million (US$1=W1,068) to UNICEF in early 2010 to help earthquake victims in Haiti and was appointed goodwill ambassador later that year.  In May 2011, Kim donated her $27,000 prize money from the World Figure Skating Championship to help Japanese children in areas devastated by the earthquake and tsunami. She gave the $45,000 prize money from this year's championship to help disabled children around the world.
