Uli Stielike, manager of the Korean national football team, on Tuesday announced his 23-man squad for the upcoming friendlies here late this month. Korea faces Uzbekistan in Daejeon on March 27, and New Zealand in Seoul on March 31. Cha Du-ri of FC Seoul, who retires from the national squad after the AFC Asian Cup in Australia in January, will start against New Zealand.
Stielike said he wanted to give Cha a chance to play rather than a mere retirement ceremony with a bouquet of flowers. There are several new names in the list. Ji Dong-won of Augsburg in Germany's Bundesliga and Kim Bo-kyung of Wigan Athletic in England's second tier Championship have 30 caps each, but this is their first time to be called by Stielike.
Kim Eun-sun of Suwon Samsung Bluewings and Lee Jae-sung of Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in the K-League are the other new faces. Lee Jeong-hyeop of Sangju Sangmu, who impressed in his international debut during the Asian Cup, was also selected. "After finishing second at the Asian Cup, we received a hero's welcome here. We accomplished a great deal over three weeks in Australia, and I am sure the players know that they can get a lot of love from the fans if they work hard," Stielike said. "But at the same time, we can also lose a lot over a short period of time. That's why it's important to play well this time."
