A TMZ segment showing the staff commenting on EXID's Junghwa's accent as she mingled with fans in front of LAX airport has disgruntled many fans. The video was released on May 1st, showing EXID arriving in Los Angeles. The camera focuses on Junghwa, who tells the camera that she was very happy to be in the US. One of the female TMZ staff members mocked her accent after the clip was shown.
You can see some of the male staff shaking their heads as she defended her actions by stating that if it were a British girl's accent, she would be copying her accent as well. An Asian girl can be seen chiming in at the TMZ office at this point, suggesting that at least she did not mock Asians by saying "Thank You" in a submissive tone with a heavy accent. Some of the male staff then state that it is okay when she says those things because she is Asian herself. A few of the staff members clearly look uneasy with the conversation that is going on.
Some may have found it either funny or inoffensive, but f(x)'s Amber stepped in to let the world know that she is not one of those people. She took to her Twitter and stated, "I was gunna stay quiet but i cant. Seriously, @tmz not cool man. All Americans face palm at your rude and childish actions."
EXID's label didn't find the situation funny either. In a phone call with Star News, the group said, "We saw what happened. We're very angry that they would make fun of Koreans' way of talking and their tone. This is not something to laugh about. It is a clear case of racism. We are going to go through Korean media in America to contact TMZ and demand a response."
