The Thanksgiving weekend was not so kind for the violent psychological thriller remake of Old Boy from Spike Lee.  The reinterpretation is from a violent South Korean film based on revenge.  Oldboy was never predicted to beat out the top films, such as Hunger Games; Catching Fire or Disney’s Frozen.  Oldboy stars Josh Brolin and Samuel L Jackson which earned just over $850,000 on the opening weekend, which ranked a dismal 17th place.  Film District representative shared that Oldboy fared the best on the country’s coasts from Los Angeles to New York.

The film is currently being screened at just 533 theaters which is due to the low per screen average of $1458.00.  This resulted in a very disappointing opening weekend for the film which also fell behind Gravity and Captain Phillips.  With an interview with New York Times, Spike Lee shared vague displeasure with the studio about the decisions that were made regarding the final cut.

Spike Lee’s last words in the interview were, “Tough business.  That’s all I’m going to say. Tough business.”
