The Seoul Central District Court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for ex-President Park Geun-hye after she refused to obey two summonses to testify in the trial of former Cheong Wa Dae security staffer Lee Young-sun. Lee is on trial on charges of allowing quack physicians to perform unauthorized cosmetic treatments on the ousted leader when she was still in office.
Independent counsel Park Young-soo named the disgraced president as a witness in the charges against Lee. The court summoned Park Geun-hye on May 19, but Park submitted a notice saying she was too busy preparing for her own corruption trial.
She demanded to answer questions in writing instead, but the court summoned her again to appear on Wednesday. Park refused again, so prosecutors applied for an arrest warrant even though Park is already on remand.
It allows court officials to fetch her if she does not turn up on Wednesday.
