The website of the National Election Commission suffered a distributed denial-of-service or DDoS cyber-attack on Election Day. DDos attacks overload websites by activating masses of zombie computers that have been infected with a virus. The NEC resumed all services within minutes by using a cyber shelter and no damages were reported due to the attack.
The NEC has asked police to investigate the incident. This is not the first time attack on the website. During the last general elections in 2012, it sustained two DDoS attacks that lasted 52 minutes on the eve of the election. Two high school students were fingered in the police investigation. In the 2011 by-elections, the NEC's website suffered four DDoS attacks.
