North Korea's Workers Party marks its 69th anniversary on Friday, raising the question whether leader Kim Jong-un will attend after disappearing from public view for over a month. Kim has not been seen in public since Sept. 3 apparently for health reasons, but the party anniversary is one of the most important events in the Stalinist country.
Kim Yang-gon, the director of the party's United Front Department, told South Korean officials last Saturday that Kim Jong-un has "no health problems."
"The regime will probably try to make sure that Kim attends the anniversary event to put people’s concerns to rest," said Park Hyeong-jung of the Korea Institute for National Unification here. "If he's in poor health, he may have to appear in a wheelchair or at least try to deliver a video or recorded message."
But he may stay away since the anniversary is not a round one, a member of another government-funded think tank speculated. Former leader Kim Jong-il skipped both the anniversaries of the country and the party in 2008, when he had a stroke.
