U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel met with South Korea’s President Park Geun Hye and criticized Japan over its previous territorial and historical discrepancies. There is still a current issue among ownership of Dokdo Island which is an island that lies between Japan and South Korea.
There have been disputes between South Korean and Japan for quite some time now; starting with the war, and leading to territorial conflicts of smaller islands.
The meeting held on Monday was held to improve relationships between the two countries, but instead further strained the ties among them. The president stated, “I know Japan is an important country to cooperate with for peace and stability in Northeast Asia, but the trust has not been established due to the leadership which has repeatedly made regressive remarks”.
This statement certainly shows the disproval towards Japan, and its ways. Park continues to add, many South Koreans are still suffering from the Japanese occupation, such as elderly Korean women who served as concubines during World War II.
Park Geun Hye did not stop here. She proceeded to express the negative portrayal of the Japanese. “they’ve lived with deep mental scars but Japan has leveled insults against them rather than offering an apology. She stated that in order to move forward with the issue Tokyo must show a sincere attitude.
