The United States' decision to back Tokyo's military expansion has left President Park Geun-Hye in a very awkward position. This is due to the fact that she has been pushing for Japan to atone for it's actions in World War II, and also since she believes Japan holds the key to resolving issues between the three major Asian countries; Korea, Japan, and China.
Park states that Japan keeps trying to wash themselves of their sordid history, and this is leading to a lack of trust between Seoul and Tokyo. The U.S. however, is worried about Park forging a strong bond with China. Park states that she feels the U.S. is giving Japan the right to rearmament, which is very alarming to Koreans due to past history. The U.S. has stated that President Park is "excessively fixated" on the past, and wishes Seoul to build a friendly relationship with Japan in order to keep China in check.
