Have you been watching 'Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey'? This Korean drama was on air on tvN and it is a loose reinterpretation of the classic Chinese novel "Journey to the West" but set in the present day with a romantic-fantasy twist involving a monk's journey with four troublesome characters who must atone for their sins. Written by the famous Hong sisters, Hong Jung-Eun and Hong Mi-Ran, behind hit dramas such as 'You're Beautiful', 'My Girlfriend is a Nine-Tailed Fox' and 'The Master's Sun'. This drama stars Lee Seung-gi, Oh Yeon-seo, Cha Seung-won, Lee Hongki, and Jang Gwang, which marks this Lee Seung gi's first return to the small screen after completing his mandatory military service.
'Hwayugi' is currently ranked as the most-watched show of its time slot including both cable and public broadcasting channels by Nielsen Korea despite the mishaps that happened earlier in the series when they suffered one of the biggest broadcasting mistakes in Korean broadcast history. During Episode 2, there were onscreen blunders and the episode even cut out early, mid-scene with no official ending! The blunders included scenes with improperly edited CG sequences with stunt wires that were left in frame, a magical painting that was shown with the green screen still in place as well as a wire hanging from the picture frame. tvN issued an apology regarding the mistakes and re-released a completed version of the episode the following day.
What do you think of 'Hwayugi: A Korean Odyssey'? How does it rank in comparison to the other dramas written by the Hong Sisters? Let us know in the comments section!
