The 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang is right around the corner! The Games will begin on Friday, February 8th and last until February 25 and end with the Closing Ceremony. With close to 3,000 athletes participating in 102 events in 7 sports, there will be lots of athletes that will come and go across your TV screen. This marks South Korea's second Olympic Games and its first Winter Games as Seoul hosted the Summer Games in 1988. For some athletes, it marks a once in a lifetime event.
Korean American elite snowboarder Chloe Kim will make her Olympic debut in PyeongChang! Despite being only 17 years old, Kim is the dominant contender for the Women's Snowboarding halfpipe gold medal! She qualified to compete in the 2014 Olympics but was ineligible due to age requirements (13 at the time). She is the first woman to land back-to-back 1080s (a trick that involves spinning three full times) and one that you will likely see her perform for the Olympics.
The pressure and stakes are high for Chloe Kim as she is Korean American and have many Korean fans rooting for her, too. Leading up to the Olympics, Kim has finished within the top 3 in the qualifying games and garnered plenty of attention along the way. NBC Sports has revealed a heartwarming ad that will air on national TV during the SuperBowl game to promote viewers to watch Chloe Kim compete at the Olympics!
In regards to her future plans Kim has said, "I wanna go to college. I wanna graduate college,"Snowboarding is a huge part of my life, but I also feel like it's important to have a plan B or a back-up plan for after my career because I can't snowboard for my whole life competitively."
Be sure to tune in to the Olympics to watch the great Chloe Kim strive for the gold medal!
